What Can a Mother Do?

God gives women many seasons of life and of ministry. A mother’s seasons will definitely change as her children grow up, but God always gives the right ministry for the right season. And ministry starts wherever you are.

Acts 1:8 says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”As a mother, your home is your Jerusalem. Get involved where your children are, and that’s where God has already provided opportunities for ministry.

Preschool years

Get to know your neighbors. When you go to your children’s activities, look for other young mothers.


Embracing it: I wasn’t ready to be a grandma!
Pray for your kids: Breakthrough Prayer
Invite them for coffee or lunch. Then pray and look for opportunities to share your faith. You can initiate a conversation about spiritual things by giving them a Christmas Digest or a Women Today magazine and asking for their comments.

Another idea is to host an evangelistic coffee or a Christmas open house in your home. That’s how my neighbor Doreen came to the Lord. Our boys played together, and I would invite her over for coffee. As we became friends, I shared my faith with her. She prayed to receive Christ at an evangelistic coffee in my home.

Elementary school years

With a Mothers Who Care group, you can pray for the staff and students at your child’s school. Our group has prayed together for the past 12 years, and we’ve seen many answers to prayer. Children have led others to Christ and teens have invited friends to their youth group. Remember my neighbor Doreen? Both her sons became Christians because their friends invited them to church activities.

Get to know your child’s teacher. Invite her to lunch. Teachers are always glad to get out of the school for lunch. Build your relationship by helping in the classroom or on field trips. Offer to tell stories or do a puppet show to share the true meaning of Christmas or Easter.

Get involved with your local Parent Advisory Council (PAC). Several Christian moms I know have given videos such as Sex, Lies, and Truth and Teacher of the Year to their children’s school through the PAC.

Community sport leagues are also a great place to get to know people. My husband has coached many sports. At the end of the season, we always try to organize a closing event, such as a pizza party, where we can give the children and their parents evangelistic materials, like Life Story tapes highlighting the lives of well-known Christian personalities, such as Paul Henderson and Dave Dravecky. We also invite the kids to Athletes in Action sports camps.

High school years

Stay involved in your teen’s life and attend games, concerts and festivals. Offer to chauffeur for games and other events. Open your home to your children’s friends and encourage your teens to share with their friends. You may have a chance to lead a teen to Christ or disciple one using The Total Package.

Continue to disciple your teens, giving them good materials and challenging them to have regular quiet times. Keep talking with them and share from your walk with the Lord.

What season of life are you in? What areas is your child already involved in? Open your eyes and see what God sees when He looks at your world. Now, choose one area to focus on in the next three months, keeping in mind that these ideas for ministry are drawn from the panorama of a lifetime. Don’t try to do them all at once.

Remember, too, that you need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit. And that your most important ministry is to your husband and children, in every season of life.

Most prospective parents take the process of procreation for granted as natural and practically automatic. The idea of consciously preparing for conception and pregnancy is a rather recent phenomenon, but well worth the effort.

Preconception care encompasses the health services provided to women and men of reproductive age in preparation for a future pregnancy. Preconception care provides a window of opportunity to optimize both partners' health and identify any risks and take steps to reduce them.

Many of the recommendations included in preconception preparation can be done by the individual or in concert with a healthcare professional, including your own OB-GYN, or programs that specialize in this type of care.

Research has shown that every aspect of our reproduction is adversely affected in some way by our 21st century lifestyle and living conditions. The food you eat, the environment you live in, and the lifestyle you lead in the months before you conceive a child can have profound effects on the well being of your baby. Preconception healthcare can help prevent miscarriage, stillbirths, premature births, and congenital abnormalities, and can enhance fertility even with couples who have had difficulty conceiving on their own. In addition, preconception care can allow women to have a healthier pregnancy, recover more quickly after birth, and decrease your child's risk for certain adult health problems.

Large numbers of studies with animals show that when either parent is deficient in one or a number of essential nutrients, the offspring will be miscarried or will suffer from a variety of malformations. These malformations, which in the past were believed to be genetic, can be manipulated in the lab by inducing a deficiency or deficiencies in one or more of the essential vitamins and minerals.

All this means there are many things you can do to improve your physical health and psychological readiness in the critical six- to 12-month period before conception.


Anyone, really. But if you fit any of the descriptions below, you're a good candidate.

    Normal healthy, fertile couples who want to do the best for their babies.
    Couples who have had difficulty conceiving, including couples with low sperm count or motility, ovulation problems, endometriosis, etc.
    Couples who have had one or more miscarriages.
    Couples with a personal history of birth defects, prematurity, low birth weight, stillbirth, or sudden infant death syndrome.
    Couples seeking treatment for infertility through in vitro fertilization, gamete intrafallopian transfer, or intrauterine insemination who want a healthy baby as well as an increase in their chance to conceive (success rates for advanced reproductive technologies are relatively low—25 percent per cycle at best).

Protecting your fertility potential should really begin in your teens. Preconception preparation for both partners should begin six to 12 months prior to attempting to conceive.

You may be wondering why certain baby-friendly actions must be implemented in the months prior to conception. For one thing, the formation of sperm may take up to four months, so that any change in diet, lifestyle, or chemical exposure should allow at least that much time for them to have the greatest effect on conception and the health of the baby.

You must also take into account the amount of time required to realistically assess your health needs, to implement changes, adopt new habits, and have them become part of your lifestyle. The added bonus is that your future children will benefit from the healthy lifestyle they grow up with.

Three organizations have made significant contributions to defining what needs to be considered before conception. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations include at least an 18-month time period between pregnancies, 400 mcg or more of folic acid a day, cessation of smoking, avoidance of alcohol, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV testing, up-to-date immunizations, assessment of chronic conditions, avoidance of unsafe drugs during pregnancy, and achieving a healthy weight. The March of Dimes, the CDC, and 34 partner organizations are working together to educate health providers, women, and men about the importance of preconception risk reduction and healthcare .

Foresight, the Association for the Promotion of Preconception Care based in Surrey, England, has been the gold standard for preconception care in the UK since the 1970s. Starting six to 12 months prior to attempting to conceive, its client couples undergo a thorough health assessment that includes medical history, lifestyle, and assessment for allergies, nutritional imbalances, heavy metal loads, genitourinary infections, and intestinal parasites. Men are assessed for prostate infections and sperm count. The couples are advised to eat a diet of low glycemic, organic food. What to Expect During a Pre-Pregnancy Checkup

Your doctor will want to start a pre-pregnancy checkup by getting a full medical history from both you and your partner. He or she will also want to run a number of tests -- such as blood tests and a Pap smear -- to make sure that neither of you have any medical conditions that could affect pregnancy or your chances of conceiving. Your doctor might test for illnesses such as:

    Rubella, or German measles
    Chickenpox
    HIV
    Hepatitis B
    Herpes
    Other STDs (such as chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea)
    Thyroid problems (with a TSH test)
    Other conditions, such as toxoplasmosis, parvovirus B19 (also called fifth disease), and cytomegalovirus

Your doctor may want to run tests to evaluate your fertility, such as:

    Postcoital test . A small sample of your cervical fluid is taken shortly after you have sex during ovulation; your doctor examines both the fluid and the condition of the sperm in it.
    Semen (sperm) analysis. A sample of semen is taken from your partner to determine his sperm count and sperm motility (how active the sperm are).

Finally, depending on your ethnicity, your doctor may recommend genetic tests for:

    Sickle cell anemia
    Thalassemia (an inherited form of anemia)
    Jewish genetic diseases, such as Tay-Sachs disease

If it's time for you to update your vaccines, it's important to do so before you are pregnant. A few specific vaccinations, such as the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella), varicella (the virus that causes chickenpox), or hepatitis A vaccines increase the risk of birth defects. Experts advise that you wait at least 28 days after receiving some of these vaccinations before trying to conceive.
Managing Diseases in Pre-Pregnancy

If you have an existing medical condition, such as epilepsy, high blood pressure, asthma, or diabetes, it's especially important to seek out medical care before getting pregnant. Not only is it crucial to keep these illnesses under control during your pregnancy for both your and your baby's sake, but some common medications used to treat these conditions -- such as certain high blood pressure drugs -- can have an adverse affect on your pregnancy. If this is true of a medication that you're currently using, your doctor may be able to suggest a substitute.
Your doctor will probably recommend some other things if you're trying to conceive, for instance:

    Take 0.4 mg of folic acid every day. Folic acid, which naturally occurs in leafy green vegetables and artificially in fortified flour and rice products, has been shown to lower the risk of certain birth defects. Experts recommend that in addition to a good diet, you should take a multivitamin with folic acid daily for three months before pregnancy and at least three months into pregnancy. If you've had a previous pregnancy in which the fetus had birth defects of the brain and spinal cord, your doctor will probably recommend a higher dose of 4 mg of folic acid daily.
    Avoid drugs and alcohol. Not only should you stop taking any illicit drugs, but you should also talk with your doctor about whether you should continue taking any other medications or herbal supplements.
    Stop smoking. Smoking can make it harder to get pregnant, and it poses risks to the fetus.
    Eat well and exercise. Being over- or underweight can increase risks during pregnancy. Your doctor may also recommend that you avoid certain kinds of fish, such as swordfish, king mackerel, and shark because they may contain mercury that can cause problems in pregnancy.
    Go to the dentist. There is research that suggests gum disease -- an infection of the gums caused by plaque -- may increase the risk of delivering preterm or low-birth-weight weight babies. It's important for women trying to conceive to treat gum disease if they have it and, if they don't, to practice good oral hygiene to prevent it from developing.
    Think about the changes that having a baby will bring before you get pregnant. Having a child will affect everything in your life -- your career, your finances, and your relationship with your spouse or partner, among other things. Nine months can be a pretty short time to figure all of those issues out, so your doctor may be able to give some advice that will help get you ready. Your doctor may also suggest preconception classes at a local hospital if they're available.

7. This is still not the time to invest in expensive clothes—your current size is not permanent. Look for inexpensively flattering pieces from stores like Target, and maybe a few trendy pieces from Forever 21, or borrow some cute pieces from friends who’ve gone through the same transitional period. 5 things you must know to choose a right nanny

#1: Nanny Tax Compliance Hiring a nanny is more than just the search for the right person, it also involves all the work of being an employer. During the interview, introduce the candidate to your children and observe how they interact. Describe your expectations and be clear about duties, hours, wages, vacation time and listen to how the candidate responds. #3: The Screening Process Once you've found a prospective nanny, you'll want to cross your Ts and dot your Is. The International Nanny Association has put together basic nanny standards: must be at least 18 years old, must have a high school diploma or equivalent and must be in good health (with proof of immunizations). While those are a good place to start, you'll also want to conduct a thorough background check. Request and verify references from previous employers. Check work history, education records, driving record, criminal history (which will require fingerprints), credit report and Social Security number. Screening should also verify that your prospective nanny is eligible to work in the U.S. This isn't a secret process -- keep in mind that your applicants can ask to see any screening you do.

Types of Pregnancy Pillows

Pregnancy pillows come in many different shapes, from simple lines and wedges to more complex C and U shaped designs.
